Father Baker's Advocate Dies

By Joyce Kryszak

Lackawanna, NY – Parishioners and friends from Our Lady Of Victory Basilica are mourning the sudden death of their pastor, Monsignor Robert Wurtz. He died suddenly Tuesday morning following a cardiac arrest.

The 74 year-old Monsignor was remembered in a brief prayer service Tuesday, following the announcement of his death.

Longtime OLV parishioner Andy Russo left the Basilica in tears.

He called Wurtz a gracious disciple of God - and a dear friend, who will be terribly missed.

Wurtz leaves a 33-year legacy at OLV. He is perhaps best known as the devoted advocate of sainthood for the founder of Our Lady of Victory, Father Nelson Baker.

Bishop Edward Kmiec said the Monsignor and Father Baker can now continue those efforts together in heaven. But Kmiec said Wurtz's death is tremendous loss to everyone who loved him here.

Wurtz provided valued leadership and counsel for OLV's vast social services network. And he had responsibilities with the Buffalo Diocese and the National Catholic Development Counsel. OLV Parish Vicar Father Dan Fawls said, despite many serious ailments, Wurtz was tireless.

Others said that, most remarkably, Wurtz treated everyone with singular care and kindness. OLV Development Director Rick Heist had known Wurtz since 1973.

Monsignor Wurtz is expected to be laid in state at the Basilica. Memorial masses are also planned. Church Leaders sid they will also begin the difficult task of finding the appropriate successor to lead OLV.
