Buffalo, NY – A 16-year-old boy fatally shot his younger sister when a loaded rifle he was holding discharged inside the family's home.
Rachel Sacha, 12, a seventh-grade student at Lancaster Middle School, was killed Saturday evening while their parents were visiting a critically ill relative at a hospital.
No charges were filed, police said.
The children's father, a deputy district attorney, "had an old .22 rifle in back of one of the closets and the kids found it and took it out," said Erie County District Attorney Frank Clark. "They were playing with the gun and it went off."
New York law does not regulate the storage of firearms, said Tom King, president of the New York State Rifle & Pistol Association.
Rachel's school in Lancaster held a moment of silence for her Monday.
