The BPO gets ready to have fun with some Gilbert and Sullivan.By Bill Raffel, WBFO
Buffalo, NY – The Buffalo Philharmonic stages a masterpiece of musical satire. Good morning. I'm Bill Raffel with Music Notes.
The New York Gilbert and Sullivan Players are based New York City. And the only works they ever perform are the 14 operettas of Sirs William Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan. They'll join the orchestra and BPO Chorus for one of the duo's most famous work, The Pirates of Penzance. Even if you've never heard it before, you're sure to recognize one of the choruses.
Albert Bergeret is the Artistic Director for the Gilbert and Sullivan Players. And even though operetta is a bridge between high opera and musical theatre, Bergeret says that doesn't mean the music is easy.
See Albert Bergeret's Production of the Pirates of Penzance with the New York Gilbert and Sullivan Players, the Buffalo Philharmonic, and BPO Chours Friday (5/2) at 7:30?p.m. and Saturday (5/3) at 8?p.m. in Kleinhans. Then on Sunday (5/4) at 2:30?p.m., the orchestra gives a children's concert called "Rhythm in Your Rubbish."
Also this week, classical guitarist Stephen Aron is in recital Thursday (5/1) at 8?p.m. in Fredonia State's Diers Recital Hall. He'll give a free master class there Friday at 10 a.m.
Soprano Saxophonist Susan Fancher from the Amherst Saxophone Quartet gives a free half-hour recital Friday (5/2) at 12:30?p.m. in Saint Paul's Cathedral downtown.
The Canisius College Chorale presents a free concert Saturday (5/3) at 7:30?p.m. in the Montante Cultural Center at 2001 Main Street.
A number of brass and percussion players join organist David Bond for a recital on the instrument he plays every Sunday, in First Presbyterian Church on Symphony Circle across from Kleinhans. That's Sunday (5/4) at 7:30?p.m.
