Buffalo, NY – Governor David Paterson is filing legal papers in response to a lawsuit over his withholding of aid payments to local school districts.
At a news conference in New York City Wednes, Paterson said state law does allow him to withhold payments to keep the state solvent. Paterson said once revenues start increasing, the payments will be made.
This statement is somewhat at odds with one he made last week where he did suggest the delayed payments could become actual cuts if the state's revenue picture does not improve.
New York State United Teachers and the State Schools Board Association filed the suit last week. A judge is expected to hear arguments in the case in January.
