Buffalo, NY – The holiday shopping season officially began Friday with the rush of shoppers hitting local retailers and malls.

Authorities with the State Consumer Protection Board are warning shoppers to watch for scams and to take steps to protect their information from identity thieves. Precautions include avoiding deals that appear too good to be true, passing on warranties that are unnecessary and expensive, and understanding the conditions that come with gift cards.
One of Buffalo's historic retailing landmarks is drawing its share of eager shoppers and bargain hunters. The Broadway Market is best known for its Easter trappings, but Christmas is also a big season for the Market. It's celebrating its third annual Christkindlmarket Christmas Fair this weekend.
Protection from identity theft includes using websites from trustworthy companies, knowing a site's privacy policies, and not responding to e-mails from unknown entities.
