Local Radiologist Questions Breast Cancer Screening Recommendations

By Mark Scott

Buffalo, NY – A local radiologist says this week's controversial recommendation on breast cancer screenings is confusing and upsetting to many of her patients.

A government panel says most women don't need mammograms in their 40s and should get one every two years starting at 50. The panel also questioned the effectiveness of breast self-exams. Dr. Claudia Fosket is a radiologist at Southtowns Radiology. She admits she found this week's developments alarming.

Wednesday, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius tried to alleviate the confusion by saying the panel does "not set federal policy." Sebelius says women "should keep doing what they're doing." Fosket says she's providing the same advice to her patients.

Fosket says detecting cancer at an early stage makes it easier to treat.
