Buffalo, NY – Ellicott District Common Council Member Brian Davis announced his resignation late Wednesday afternoon. The embattled lawmaker delivered a brief statement on the steps of City Hall but declined to answer any questions.
Davis pleaded guilty last Friday to misdemeanor charges of using campaign funds to pay for personal expenses. His attorney said at the time that Davis would not resign. But under increasing pressure, even from some of his allies on the Council, Davis decided to step aside after serving for eight years.
The Council will select Davis' successor. Under a new law approved by voters in 2006, the Council will advertise the vacancy for five days on the city's website and public access television.
Davis apologized to his family and his supporters. He faces possible jail time when he's sentenced next February.
