New Group Promotes Green Space on Delaware, Elmwood and Franklin

By Eileen Buckley

Buffalo, NY – There is a new vision for parts of Delaware Avenue in Buffalo. A new group calling itself the Avenue Association says it would like to create more green space and park-like settings.

The Avenue Association is already working to create pocket parks and green space for pedestrians along portions of the Delaware Avenue corridor. That area includes Delaware and Elwmood, as well as and Franklin Street, between Niagara Square and Virginia.

Tuesday afternoon, the organization made a presentation to the city. Diana Principe is co-owner the Mansion on Delaware. Principe says they wanted to spark conversation and explain how some private sector businesses are already participating in this green space effort.

"We're creating space where folks can stop for lunch, reading or conversation," Principe said. "We're very excited about the idea of Wi-Fi coming into the area. It could be a hot spot for cyber-freedom."

Principe says the Mansion has already created a park-like setting in the parking lot. She says a couple of other areas in the Delaware corridor are also under construction. The Avenue Association is now working to make the effort cohesive.

"Getting bits of outdoor furniture with the same design ties the parks together."

Principe says they eventually would like to seek a public-private partnership with the city to create more green space near Trinity Church on Delaware. The Avenue Association says its primary mission is to ensure growth and development that supports the urban village model.
