State Grant Aids Lancaster Heritage Trails

By Anthea Passmore

Buffalo, NY – State Assembly Majority Leader Paul Tokasz presented a check to the town of Lancaster Wednesday to aid the completion of the town's Heritage Trails Project.

He said the $220,000 state grant will turn some of Lancaster's roadways and abandoned railroad corridors into enjoyable recreational trails.

The rails to trails experience has become an increasing trend in New York State. Tokasz says what better way to turn abandoned and unused parts of our community into positive recreational resources for visitors and residents.

"People will find an area to park. If they want to get on a bike or get on rollerbades or simply walk, they will have that opportunity," Tokasz said. "It allows people to get outdoors."

The Heritage Trails will develop links between Transit Road and the Village of Lancaster's Central Business District. The trails will begin on the eastern side of Cheektowaga, ending at Alden.

Similar projects to the Heritage trails have been developing throughout the region.
