Congress Considers Proposal to Drop "Don't Ask, Don't Tell"

By Chad Pergram

Buffalo, NY – There's a proposal in Congress for the Pentagon to drop the 12-year-old "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy. It allows gay persons to serve in the Armed Forces, so long as they don't tell and the government doesn't ask about their sexual orientation.

The military isn't hitting its recruitment and retention goals. Some lawmakers believe "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" drives gays and lesbians away from the Armed Forces at a time when the US needs them most.

The issue concerns Western New York Democratic Congresswoman, Louise Slaughter.
