Former Chautauqua County Legislator Nancy Bargar Considers State Senate Run

By Mark Scott

Jamestown, NY – Democratic State Assemblyman William Parment's decision not to run for the vacant State Senate seat in the 57th district is opening the door for another possible candidate. Former Chautauqua County Legislator Nancy Bargar says she is now considering a run.

A special election is scheduled for May 10th to fill the Senate seat that had been held by the late Patricia McGee.

After leaving the County Legislature, Bargar spent three years as Jamestown correspondent for WBFO News. But Bargar says she's poised to return to politics and acknowledges she needs to make a decision soon.

"The clock is ticking," Bargar said. "Certainly every minute that goes by is one less minute you're drumming up a vote."

But late Tuesday, the state Senate's Democratic minority leader said he doesn't have the resources to successfully mount a challenge. Bargar had said party support was going to be one of the factors in her eventual decision.

Republican State Assemblywoman Cathy Young of Olean is the leading choice of the Republican party to run for McGee's seat. She, too, has yet to make a final decision on her candidacy.
